Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 bottle 12 oz of beer (preferably stout, like Guinness)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet or round bread pan
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Knife (for scoring the bread)
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a round bread pan.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the beer, melted butter, and buttermilk. Stir until the dough comes together. If it seems too dry, add a little more buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time.
  4. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it gently for about 1-2 minutes, just until it comes together into a rough, sticky dough.
  5. Shape the Loaf: Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to score a cross on top of the loaf, which will help it expand while baking.
  6. Bake: Place the bread in the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm with butter or your favorite spread.

Notes

Beer Selection: The type of beer you use will affect the flavor of the bread. Dark stouts like Guinness will give it a richer, more robust flavor, while lighter beers like lagers will result in a more subtle taste.
Gluten-Free Option: If you're looking for a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Ensure the beer you choose is also gluten-free.
Add-ins: Feel free to add cheese, herbs, or spices to customize the flavor of the bread. A handful of grated cheddar or rosemary can bring extra flavor to your loaf.
Storage: Beer soda bread is best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If it becomes stale, toast it for an added crunch.
